Mobile Websites
What is a mobile website? How is it different from a regular website?
Mobile websites are specifically designed for viewing on Mobile Devices such as Mobile Phones.
Until recently websites were meant to be seen on a computer that has a large screen for viewing, along with reasonable processing power and internet speed. Mobile phones in general have smaller screens and are far less powerful than a computer. Also, their internet connection speed is much slower. So websites in their current form will not work well on mobile phones. Hence the need for websites to be specially created for mobile phones.
This piece came out in March of 2009 as a result of a recent ComScore study, it has a lot of great Mobile Internet stats, some of which should have advertisers and marketing execs perking up and digging for more.
Quoting the study, here are a few numbers:
- The number of U.S. cell phone users who accessed the mobile Internet daily doubled in 2009, reaching 22 million in January
- The number of people using the mobile Web to access a social networking site quadrupled to 9 million
- The number of people who used the mobile Web to trade stocks or access a financial account nearly tripled to 3 million
- The number of people with smartphones in the US increased 81% over the past year, to 24.8 million from 13.7 million
